Updated Information from USM in response to 2020 Admissions

First and most importantly, I hope this finds you and your family healthy and safe!

Here are some important updates we'd like to share with you.

Celebrating the Class of 2020
This senior class has been constantly in our thoughts. We feel so much for these seniors who are experiencing the final leg of their high school journey in such an unexpected way.  Two of our main priorities right now are to celebrate those students in any way that we can and to offer them hope and reassurance that an amazing freshman year is still right around the corner. We have dreamed up some really cool ways to celebrate your USM-bound seniors and cannot wait to share those details with you later! In the meantime, if you have any specific needs or ideas about how we can support and celebrate your seniors, please let me know.

Virtual Admission Sessions
We are offering 30-minute, one-on-one virtual sessions with an Admissions representative, and interested students can book a session online. Admissions counselors have also been reaching out to the students in their territories, offering a similar virtual chat option. Now is also a great time to check out our Southern Miss Video Tours and our Day In The Life Student Videos.

Freshman Orientation
Freshman Orientation sessions will be one-day events in July. Spots are filling up quickly, and students are urged to reserve their spot by the May 1 deadline.

Scholarship Acceptances
Students should still accept their scholarship offers in the GO System by the deadline of May 1. On a related note, outcomes from the Luckyday, Honors College, Discovery, and Presidential Scholarship competitions were emailed on March 13. We also extended STAR Student Scholarship offers to admitted STAR Students on April 6.

Application Documents
We continue to process transcripts and score reports that are mailed to our office or submitted electronically. Also, we are temporarily waiving the requirement for high school seniors to submit an ACT or SAT score to complete an application for freshman admission. It's our hope that by waiving this requirement for a short period of time, it will alleviate some of the burden students may have associated with obtaining score reports from ACT or SAT - and keep moving in a positive direction with their plans to attend college in the fall. Students who meet the 3.2 core high school GPA requirement will be admissible without test scores.

You and your entire school community are in our thoughts as you help all of your students navigate these difficult days. As questions or concerns arise, or if you think of a way that Southern Miss can be there for a future Golden Eagle, I hope you'll reach out to me and let me know. We're all in this together, and we're here to help.
